Supportive food choices

Fatty liver disease

A vegetable-rich, minimally processed eating pattern, healthy fats, physical activity, little or no alcohol and gradual weight management can support liver health.

How food may help

Fatty liver disease is closely linked with metabolic health, but people can have it at different body sizes and for different reasons. General guidance favours vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, fish or other suitable proteins and unsaturated fats while reducing sugary drinks, heavily processed foods and excess alcohol.

  • Choose whole foods and high-fibre meals most of the time.
  • Replace sugary drinks with water or unsweetened options.
  • Use olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocado and fish as suitable fat sources.
  • Aim for gradual, sustainable change rather than “liver detox” products.
Personalise this advice

Fatty liver can progress without obvious symptoms. Medical review, blood tests and sometimes imaging are important. Alcohol advice may need to be stricter depending on the cause and severity of liver disease.
